Chubb reported third-quarter results that beat analyst estimates, with record nine-month profit.
Insurance is Chubb's core business, and its property and casualty combined ratio of 84.1% shows it is making a wide underwriting margin on the policies it writes. Premium growth was modest and quarterly core operating income in dollars slipped, so the strength came from year-to-date gains. The wider insurer group is strong, so Chubb's results read across to the rest of the group.

Capital One reported higher quarterly profit as it continues to integrate Discover.
Net income rose to $3.5 billion, or $5.61 a share, from $4.73 in the second quarter and $4.83 a year earlier. It shows a big card lender absorbing a major acquisition while earnings grow. That is a useful read for card issuers ahead of American Express results on October 23.

Blackstone closed an $8.7 billion fund for cleaner energy, and its shares rose 3.0%.
Raising a large fund brings in capital that earns management fees, and it shows investors still commit money to private-market strategies. The rise was confined to Blackstone, since asset managers as a group have been weak. Blackstone reports earnings on October 22, which will show how the fundraising feeds into results.

JPMorgan Chase closed a multi-part bond sale, and Bank of America is back in the market with another.
JPMorgan sold floating-rate and fixed-to-floating notes due 2030 and 2037, and Bank of America is selling bonds a week after a sale of about $8 billion. Big banks are raising long-term funding in volume, which shows debt markets are open to them. US bank shares have weakened over the past week, so the funding activity has not lifted the group.
