Defence & Space:
Share
What changed in defence and space, and why it mattered.
Space stocks sold off together, led by AST SpaceMobile down 10.5% and Intuitive Machines down 9.5%.
Rocket Lab fell 7.8%, Firefly 7.2%, Planet Labs 6.8%, Redwire 5.9% and EchoStar 4.0%, so this was a group move across launch, lunar, imaging and satellite names, not one company's problem. The pack has no company-specific news behind it, and the space stories today involve no listed tickers. The sector was already weakening this week and this extends it.
Hegseth pushed for $50B in mass drone production and a generational rise in defense investment, yet AeroVironment closed 5.1% lower.
The Pentagon's rhetoric on drones and autonomy was strong, and the Army widened its drone marketplace to 33 nations. The listed drone name still fell, so the policy signal did not translate into support for the stock today. These are statements of need, not funded awards to a named company.
The US Army picked nine companies to build next-generation command and control software, while Palantir fell 3.7% and BigBear.ai fell 8.8%.
The pack does not say who the nine are, so the share moves cannot be tied to the award. Software-services was one of the firmer sectors this week, and today's drops in these two names show it was not immune to the selling.
Thales is quadrupling missile output at its Belfast facility, and Oshkosh is adapting its JLTV for a Dutch patrol vehicle requirement.
Both are supply-side and demand-side signs of European armies buying, with one supplier adding munitions capacity and a US vehicle maker pursuing a Dutch requirement. How much joint European procurement money flows will be decided at the European Council summit on 2026-10-15, not by the companies.

Applied Aerospace & Defense rose 5.8% and Elbit Systems rose 5.0% on a day when most tracked names fell.
These were the two clear gainers in the pack, in components and electronics. The pack gives no company news for either, so treat them as isolated moves, not a sector turn. Electronics was otherwise soft, with two of its names slipping in weakness this week.
Northrop Grumman, RTX and GE Aerospace report on 2026-10-20, with CACI following on 2026-10-21.
These are the first big prime and engine results in the window, and they give the first hard numbers on how the weak primes group is trading against fundamentals. CACI adds a read on software-services and government IT demand.

The wider defence and space group weakened again this week, with space and aero-engines the sectors that slipped.
Space and aero-engines both weakened, with Safran among the names that lost ground. Electronics stayed weak, with Hensoldt and Teledyne slipping. Primes, naval, land-munitions, drones-autonomy and components stayed weak and unchanged, and software-services held firm. Today's gains were therefore confined to a few stocks.
