What changed in the AI trade, and why it mattered.
SpaceX is reportedly seeking a $40 billion debt package to finance Nvidia AI hardware, and Nvidia reportedly plans to invest in inference chip startup d-Matrix.
Debt-funded demand for Nvidia systems from a buyer outside the usual hyperscaler group suggests the appetite for AI hardware is widening, and financing is becoming part of the demand story. An Nvidia stake in an inference startup would show it hedging toward the inference side of the market. Both items are reports, not confirmed deals.
Networking and server names rose: Ciena closed 5.6% higher, Penguin Solutions 6.6%, Applied Optoelectronics 3.5% and HPE 3.5%. AXT fell 4.5%.
Gains across optical networking and servers show the move reached the equipment that sits between and around the accelerators, not just the chip names. AXT was the exception in networking. Networking and servers both held firm on the week.
GlobalFoundries will produce silicon interposers for TSMC's CoWoS packaging in the US, while Amkor fell 3.7%.
Advanced packaging is a known bottleneck for AI accelerators, and a US interposer source adds capacity and a domestic supply route for TSMC's CoWoS. Amkor, a packaging name, fell on the day, and semicap has weakened a little over the week. TSMC reports on 2026-10-15.
Oracle closed 4.2% higher, and Bitdeer AI signed a 67MW AI cloud agreement in Malaysia.
Oracle's rise fits the continued build-out of AI cloud capacity. Bitdeer's deal adds to the supply of AI cloud capacity outside the US. Neoclouds as a group weakened over the week, so the Bitdeer deal is not matched by sector-wide strength.
A council in northern Italy rejected an 80MW data center proposal.
Local permitting is a real constraint on data center capacity. It is one rejection, though, set against several new projects filed or planned in Texas. Next week brings the OCP Global Summit on 2026-10-12 and ASML earnings on 2026-10-14.
