What changed in the AI trade, and why it mattered.
Optical and networking names sold off hard: Applied Optoelectronics fell 13.6%, MaxLinear 12.7%, AXT 10.2%, Coherent 9.6%, Astera Labs 9.2%, Corning 6.4%.
The networking group took the sharpest losses in the pack, so this was the weakest corner of the AI build-out today. These are the suppliers of optical and connectivity parts inside AI clusters, and the pack gives no company-specific news to explain the drop, so it reads as a group-wide de-risking. The sector has also weakened over the week, from fully strong to one name losing its footing.
Neoclouds fell together: CoreWeave closed 7.8% lower and Nebius 7.3% lower.
These companies rent out AI compute and are the most exposed to the cost and availability of financing, which makes today's debt-funding reports relevant to them. Neocloud is also the weakest sector in the pack, with only one of its three stocks still strong, down from a week ago.
Arm fell 6.5%, and power names Vistra and Innio fell 6.3% and 5.6%.
The selling reached into compute IP and power, so it was not confined to optical and neocloud. Vistra's drop follows a week in which the power sector strengthened sharply, with Vistra among the names that had just turned strong, so part of the move looks like a pullback from a recent run. The pack gives no company-specific cause.
Former Groq engineers are suing the Groq board over the $20 billion Nvidia deal.
The suit adds legal and governance noise to Nvidia's large deal for Groq. The pack does not say how it could change the terms or timing, so treat it as a risk to watch, not a change to the deal.
Next week has OCP Global Summit on October 12, ASML earnings on October 14 and TSMC earnings on October 15.
After a broad sell-off, the OCP Global Summit is the clearest read on where AI build-out spend goes next in racks, power and cooling. ASML and TSMC results will show how demand is running at the equipment and chip manufacturing end of the chain.
